Tommy's weekend

I realized I still need to put pics on of Jack's weekend...oh well tomorrow.

Tommy and Scott just left for their Buckeye weekend. They are heading to the OSU/USC game on Saturday, the Cleveland Browns game on Sunday (a first for BOTH of them in Cleveland AND they play the Vikings :) ) Then to the farm and to the Wayne County Fair!

What a great weekend ahead they have of bonding, talking and just hanging out. I am sure there will be some golf being played, basketball one on one games at the Townsleys house (Scott best friend from OSU who lives in Columbus), food from Grandma and the all famous LERCH's DONUTS! Bring some home please.

Boys find out about baby

This is a few months late, but I am finally figuring out how to add videos to the blog. Here is the one where we tell the boys about the baby. It gets a little long, I have no clue how to edit it and make it shorter. So enjoy...there's a lot of paparazzi photos.

watch Drew as the light bulb goes off, Tommy as he tries not to show emotion (happy emotion) and Jack as he is stunned...and if you do last through the whole thing. Scott's comment at the end is pretty funny.

One day by Aaron Shust

Last Wednesday I went to the memorial for a friend's Dad who had passed away, Kristi Johnson's Dad for those of you who know her. They had this song playing as we were all being seated. I had not heard it before, or if I had I hadn't listened to the words before.

A wonderful song...a perfect song to celebrate someone's life. It was a wonderful thought to hear it as you prepared for the service. It truly set the tone.

Jack's tummy

Scott and Jack got home last night around 9:00. So good to have them home.

Jack said to me this morning "Mommy my tummy hurts I don't think I can go to school"

Mommy: "Jack I know you missed being home but you need to go to school"

Jack: "Mommy I am not pretending my tummy hurts so I can stay home, play with my Legos, my new happy meal toys, snuggle with you and watch TV. Really I'm not."

Mommy: "Jack get your shoes for school"

Aww how I would love to have kept him home, now if he calls from school and really is sick I will feel badly. But I think he knows as well as I do that his tummy just wanted a quiet day home with Mommy. And to tell you the truth, I would have loved it.

Servant Hearts

Something that has been on my mind and on my heart these past several months is how do we create servant hearts in our children, and how do we continue to grow them in ourselves. We want our children to grow up to be compassionate and giving people, people who want to show others, by their actions, what it means to serve. This is such an important part of life. We want them to be the hands and feet of Jesus, to serve as He would serve. To step out of our comfort zone of suburbia. To really SEE what it means to have needs. It is very high on our list that our boys are raised knowing what compassion for others is, respect for ALL people...

My friend Wendy saw a posting I had on facebook a month or so ago where I wrote about wanting to find opportunity for our kids to serve others...she told me about something their church does every 4th of the month and invited us to come along in September.

Friday night we met her at her church, loaded up 20 gallons of milk in the back of the car and followed her and her family downtown to the Central Iowa Shelter. Wendy's car was loaded with casseroles and fruit and rolls..oh and desserts too. We spent the next 30 minutes preparing the kitchen to serve the homeless people who lived in this shelter. We went out and prayed before dinner... over 130 of them were there waiting for the dinner window to open....and what happened next is something I don't think I will EVER forget.

That window opened and I stood by Tommy on one side and Drew on my other, both with one of my friend Wendy's little girls next to them helping. And we served every person dinner, and some of them doubles and some even thirds. :) I listened as I heard Tommy say to these people, with utmost repsect "Sir would you like a roll" and I heard Drew say further down the line "What can we give you for dessert"...I heard the boys talk sports with some of the residents, laugh at some of their cute comments. It was all I could do not to melt down in a puddle of tears. I really felt like we were SERVING just as Jesus would do if He was walking on this earth. We were being HIS hands.

To have our boys treating these men and women with the same respect they would treat anyone melted my Mommy heart. To see them smile at these people, any fear they had before the window opened was gone. They were eager to serve, they LOVED it. They were so happy to be there.

After dinner was served we were able to get a tour of the shelter from Claude, the man in charge on Friday night. We saw their living arrangements, 68 men in ONE room, about the size of our living room/kitchen area ONE bathroom. The women 28 in one room, about the size of our bedroom ONE bathroom. The vets were given separate living quarters 10 to that room with a TV and bathroom, the high life as Claude called it. You can stay for up to 90 days in the shelter then out for 90 then back, if there are beds. No closets, no dressers, there is nothing they have to store.

One thing the boys won't forget is while we were on the tour, a lady resdient came to talk to Claude. She had been taken to the ER that morning, and by the time she arrived back they had given up her bed. She was asking if she could have a bed back. The boys heard the entire conversation and couldn't believe because she was gone in the morning she came back and it was gone.

It was life changing. The shelter is always in need of a group to take a night, or to help quarterly. I mentioned it to a pastor at church yesterday and hope we can do it through church, but at the very least we plan on getting a group of friends together and helping quarterly as we can. The boys LOVED it, and I loved it. There was nothing better we could have done with our Friday night.

A lesson for our family...wish Scott and Jack could have been with us, but we will go again. The residents could not have been more gracious to us. We are so blessed in so many ways...God is good.

HIghest levels of Dad

A quick note, before I forget this...I'll write more later about our great weekend.

Drew was home helping me this morning with my latest organization project and we were talking here is how the conversation went.

Drew:" Mom do you think I'll be a good Dad when I grow up"

Mom: "I most certainly do. I have no doubt you will be a GREAT Dad"

Drew: " But Mom it will be hard to be a better Dad than Dad is. I mean he is a Dad at one of the highest levels a Dad could ever be"

Mom: "I know Drew, he is one of the best Dads and you will be too"

Drew is now off golfing with Tommy, a buddy and his Dad too. So it is back to work for me in the basement. But I didn't want to forget that moment. We have had a great weekend, we have done a lot of serving and it has done our hearts well. I will write about it all later.

Scott and Jack are on their way home from Ohio...we can't wait to see them. They have been missed.

Jack's weekend with Daddy

This is Jack's Ohio weekend with Dad. They leave tonight after his first flag football practice and will drive part way. Stay in a hotel, with a pool Jack hopes, and drive the rest of the way to Columbus tomorrow.

Jack woke up SO excited talking all about what they will do, where they will eat (any guesses?), the pool, making cookies in the hotel with Daddy, snuggling with Daddy....this morning he got all of his STUFF together this morning thanks to Drew's help. DVD player charged, DS, DVD's to watch, books to read, snacks...he is all set.

Scott is enroute home from his trip to Texas, he will be home a few hours before its time to head out and leave again.

I think these weekends are priceless for our boys. I love that Scott does it. They will go to the Ohio State game on Saturday, Scott will cry the entire morning, so sentimental about his beloved Buckeyes and even more so about one on one weekends with his boys, the band will enter the stadium, he will be holding Jack's hand, the flag will be raised by the military, jack's hand will be over his heart while Scott looks down with tears...the team comes on the field...Scott is crying now as he reads this. It is one of the cutest things to watch. They will the drive to the farm and spend Sunday there with his parents, ride some tractors, eat Grandma's good food, applesauce, cookies...then head home Monday.

So much fun...here are pics from last years trip.

Baths, brothers and Star Wars:

I was just up in our bathroom brushing my teeth when I saw the tub was still full of water and towels were all over the edge of the tub...had to run down and type this quick...

tonight we were moving the old office furniture out of the office, (it's on the market if anyone wants it, it's very nice )

while Scott was working on disassembling that, I was baking chocolate chip cookies to bribe our "worker" when he came to help scott move it all...I asked Tommy to start the tub for Jack. He did so....stayed with him while he took his bath for most of it, talking to him...then Drew asked if he could head up and wash Jack's hair. I said sure swap out with Tommy. SO between the 2 of them they completely got Jack bathed and hair washed. Pretty cute. Our bathroom shows that they were all in there without monitoring from me, but that's okay.

Then Taylor Owens came over...Taylor is the younger brother of Miss Emily :).

Emily and her brothers, right after they saw her on her wedding day. Taylor (rt) couldn't stop the tears. It was so sweet.

He is a riot and the boys think he's great. I wish I would have taken his picture with the boys. After he helped Scott move everything to the garage in many loads for the desk that comes apart in sections, he ate a bunch of cookies, and then sat with Jack and let Jack read his homework book to him. I wish I would have grabbed a picture of the moment. He was in our big red chair, Jack on his lap, Drew on the arm and Tommy right there. It was pretty cute. They all really like Taylor, he is 22 years old, tall, red hair and is just a fun loving guy. He comes from an awesome family.

Then after homework was done...he let Jack show him his Star Wars book he loves....and Taylor is a HUGE Star Wars fan so since Jack has yet to see the movies he has a bizillion questions and sweet Taylor answered them all, explained as much as he could to them until it was almost 9 and I said it was an hour past bedtime they had to let Taylor leave.

The boys all stood at the door yelling goodbye to Taylor...it was sweet. We sent him home with a plate of cookies and a BIG thank you for helping us out. I love it when guys like that are role models for kids...he could have rushed through the moving stuff and just left. But no he stayed and spent time with the boys. And then he was off...I know his night had just begun. :)
